In a continuing effort to make the Wii Remote more like a safe gaming peripheral and less like a blunt object, Nintendo has announced a new accessory for current and future Wiimotes.

A silicone slip-on jacket for the Wii Remote, the Wii Remote Jacket (not just a clever name) provides cushioning for errant Wiimotes flung through the air in addition to extra traction for your hand. Full disclaimers apply: this in no way removes the need to strap the Wiimote on your wrist for your gaming experience, but it will help if the strap snaps and you find your skull on the receiving end of one of these things. (Hint: it hurts!)

So, all shipping units will get these as soon as they hit the channel, but current Wii owners who want to equip their Wii Remotes with the new Wii Remote Jacket free of charge can go to Wii.com, nintendo.com, or call 1-866-431-8367 to place an order. Nintendo will begin taking orders on Oct. 2, and Wii Remote Jackets will begin shipping the week of Oct. 15.

Apparently this isn’t a permanent addition. You’re supposed to be able to slip the jacket on and off with ease, in case you need to put your Wiimote into the Zapper shell. Y’know, just in case you’re thinking about picking one of those up.
