Few people think of ASUS’ new Eee PC laptop as much of a gaming solution, but the indefatigable persistence of dedicated gamers has once again showed that it takes more than modest system specs to defeat the impetus for computerized time-wasting. The $200-$400 notebook, designed primarily to employ Linux and offer modest, affordable internet use, but according to Gaming Today (who show off a video of Vice City on an Eee PC), you can accomplish a whole lot more.
Currently, there are rumors that a new model will be released after an announcement at next week’s CES. Numerous PC games work on the Eee and there are reports that most emulators such as PS2 emulators work fine on the computer as well. The above video shows a gamer playing GTA: Vice City on the sub-notebook. With a price range of $200-$400, the Eee is really an affordable way to play PC games on the go.
“Sub” notebooks (which are characterized by a modest price tag and anemic system resources) are a burgeoning trend in the market right now as is demonstrated by the ASUS Eee, machines from Vaio, and rumors of a new notebook from Apple on the horizon for 2008. Typically, hardcore gaming is equated with higher-power machine… but if there’s one thing gamers and geeks both share a hatred for, it’s being told “no”. With the rise of the $500-or-less notebook in the market, 2008 should see some interesting solutions crop up for making games work their magic on lighter systems.
