MTV, in its endless quest to do anything but show music videos, has a neat story about Sid Meier, whom reporter Stephen Totilo had lunch with (they had tuna and steak, respectively). Meier’s name has been up front in the news a bit more lately due to the upcoming release of his game, Civilization: Revolutions, due out June 3 for Xbox, PS3 and DS. Most interestingly was Meier’s discussion of the three most important moments in gaming, and they were described thusly:
Meier stopped to think of three innovations more important than anything else in gaming history. The first he mentioned was IBM making a personal computer. Another was the development of “Sim City” and other games that encouraged construction, rather than just destruction. The third, Meier said, was Nintendo’s Official Seal of Quality, a 1980s stamp of gaming quality that he said helped counter the flow of bad games that had drowned so many previous video game consoles.
The article itself is quite lengthy and there’s a whole lot more there beyond his three “most important moments” thing. I had the pleasure of interviewing him myself a few years back and he’s a very interesting guy, as you can see by reading the article.
