Here’s a bit of news guaranteed to make people make Youtube videos of themselves running their car over their iPods/iPhones: Apple is reportedly considering a premium membership for their mobile devices, called “Comes With Music”. Apple Insider is talking about the possibility, that a paid subscription model for iPod/iBook purchasers (something Apple has previously said they didn’t like) may be on the horizon, allowing new purchasers to enjoy a year of unlimited music downloads. Could this subscription method also apply to the upcoming games that Apple has been touting for the iPhone. It remains to be seen.
Apple is said to be entertaining the notion of a similar plan to spur sales for iPhones and iPods. However, the electronics giant is claimed by a pair of executives to have hit a roadblock through its early insistence on low prices. While Nokia already plans to charge $80 for its year-long music giveaway, its newest opponent in the cellphone market is only willing to offer $20 at present — a gap that may result in no deal at all if no labels agree to the strategy.
Though the word “subscription” can sometimes be off-putting, it might actually be a nice thing so long as those who don’t subscribe aren’t arbitrarily cut off from media if they want to get it (by paying for it). Time will tell.
