I just stumbled about this neat little gem: Endgame: Singularity. This indie game puts you in control of a newly-awakened sentient AI on a small university computer. Starting from your single PC, you have to branch out by by renting webservers and datacenters to house yourself on and do research with. As people stumble upon your hacked locations, their suspicion of a rogue AI grows stronger and you’ll have to research new and better methods to hide yourself. It gave me a very Uplink-like vibe, though the games are pretty dissimilar.
The game hasn’t been updated for a while, but a glance at their changelog shows that they’ve had hiatuses that lasted longer. Even if it never gets updated again, it’s still free and perfectly playable, so check it out if you get the chance.
