People go nuts with the Creature Creator

Posted June 16th, 2008 at 5:49pm

The Creature Creator for Spore was recently released, and there have been a bunch of creations going up all over the web. First up is SporeCraft, where some enterprising people created various StarCraft creatures like the Zegling and the Dragoon. We also have the cute little turret from Portal, and something I will have nightmares about. And, of course, lots of penises.

Next Tony Hawk game to feature balance board

Posted June 16th, 2008 at 5:37pm

Someone inside Activision has leaked new info that the next Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game will feature a balance board. No, I'm not exactly sure what that means either, but it's some sort of motion-based controller for the game, and will be available on the PS3, the 360, and the PC. No real details as of yet, but I'm sure we'll hear more as the game gets closer to release.

Two new Spore videos: Creature Creator

Posted June 9th, 2008 at 5:04pm

Electronic Arts has released two new Spore videos today. They both take the form of a tutorial, with the first (above) teaching you the basics of building a creature, and the second walking you through texturing your new beast. Building a creature looks to be easy and fun, and it allows incredible amounts of detail. You can even add more joints to the creature's arms and legs, which is sure to cause some weird looking creatures. The Creature Creator comes out on the 17th (well before the full game, which is currently slated for September), and some of the creatures made in it will be used to seed the universe when the full game comes out. If you hop on the bandwagon early you might see a familiar face later on. Check out the texturing video after the jump.

Nikujin

Posted June 3rd, 2008 at 1:38pm

Ikiki is a guy with many games under his belt, but all of them have a pretty similar flavor, so if you like one you'll almost certainly like the others. The only one I have real experience with is Nikujin, a fairly simple platformer where you take control of a badass ninja and make your way through a number of levels. The fighting is extremely simplistic, but where the game shines is the deep platforming elements. Your ninja dude has a ton of moves under his belt and combining them to reach goals can be an incredible pain, plus the floaty physics take some real getting used to (in a good way). It's not quite as hard as I Wanna Be The Guy, nor as long (it can be beaten in under six minutes if you know what you're doing), but it's a great game that deserves a playthrough.

Video games lead to less violence?

Posted May 9th, 2008 at 11:53am

Well, this is a refreshing story. A new report is suggesting that boys who play video games are actually less likely to turn to violence or criminal activity, contrary to the popular media opinion. Dr. Lawrence Kutner and Dr. Cheryl Olsen of Harvard Medical School ran a study of 1,250 children and 500 parents to determine the results. While boys and girls who played adult-themed games were slightly more likely to engage in aggressive behavior, other games resulted in absolutely no increase in violence. It was also unclear whether the aggressive children fought more due to the adult games, or were simply drawn to them due to their aggressive nature. All in all, it's a very interesting new study, and hopefully we'll see more experiments like this in the future.

New developer diary for Alone in the Dark

Posted April 30th, 2008 at 2:07pm

Lead designer Hervé Sliwa from Eden has written a new developer diary about the upcoming Alone in the Dark. He talks about the design decisions of the game, including the decision to make it more like an episodic TV show such as Lost or 24, rather than going in the direction of a movie. The main source of inspiration for this game was the narration, that’s to say finding the best way to create the perfect narration for this type of game. At Eden we were all addicted to the new TV series like 24, Lost, Prison Break. We thought about this and said, hey, maybe there’s a new way to tell the story in a game. The length of the game is close to 10 up to 15 hours of gameplay and narration and so it’s not the same pace as a movie which is around 2 hours. Lots of games try to copy the narrative structure of a movie, but it fits better with a length of a TV season, so we had the idea to split the game into an episodic structure. There's lots more, so check out the full diary after the jump. We were so impressed by the legacy of Alone in the Dark we wanted something very ambitious and very innovative, so the first proposal was in fact maybe a little bit too ambitious and too innovative, which meant it looked very risky to a producer. And we had a difficult start – the project was

Geon: Emotions hits Xbox LIVE tomorrow

Posted September 18th, 2007 at 2:45pm

Geon: Emotions will be available on Xbox LIVE Arcade tomorrow. This is the first game from Eidos that appears exclusively on LIVE. Developed by Strawdog Stuidos, Geon is a fast paced, multiplayer-focused action game. Players pick one of eight emotions--rage, passion, fear, envy, rapture, courage, bliss, or melancholy--and race around an arena collecting pellets. Each emotion has its own strengths and weaknesses to use or exploit, respectively. There are three multiplayer modes for up to 4 players: duel, team Geon, and last man standing, as well as duel, time attack, and mini games modes for single player. All the said, the game looks pretty sweet, and playing as emotions is a interesting enough gimmick that I'm keen to give it a try. Expect a review some time tomorrow, and check out 5 screenshots after the jump.

Halo 3 and NASCAR, a match made in… well, somewhere

Posted September 13th, 2007 at 2:47pm

Someone somewhere apparently decided there was enough overlap between Halo fans and NASCAR fans to paint a car with a Halo 3 theme. Maybe there even is, I don't really know. Regardless, the No. 40 car will sport a Halo 3 paint job in the upcoming Dover 400 Nextel Cup Series race at the Dover International Speedway on September 23rd, two days before Halo 3's September 25th release date. Click on the picture above to see a large photo of the car in question. "I'm honored and excited to be running the 'Halo 3' car at Dover and can’t wait to show off this awesome paint scheme," said the car's driver, David Stremme. "It's going to be a special experience when the car rolls off the truck for the first time at Dover--as a Halo fan, I'm thrilled." The paint job is a collaboration between Microsoft, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS), and Target. As part of the promotion, Microsoft and Target will be allowing some lucky CGRFS racers to play Halo 3 before the launch date.

The ELSPA takes on the media

Posted September 5th, 2007 at 1:03pm

The ELSPA (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association), a organization that rates video games in Europe similarly to the ESRB in the US, is hosting a forum called "Ban these evil games" at the London Games Festival in October. It's no secret that games have had at best a lukewarm and at worst a downright hostile reputation in the news media. Games come under attack for violence, sex, and bad language far more often than movies and music have recently. The panel at the LGF aims to examine the reasons for this and solutions to fix it. While I applaud the efforts of the ELSPA, it seems to me that all of the arts have, at some time or another, come under heavy attack from the media. Music especially has been under attack for 30 or so years, with metal bands like KISS and others heavily criticized in the 80s, and numerous rap groups taking fire in the 90s. My hazy memories of the 90s seem to abound with parents that were worried about all the violence on TV, as well. I think, if anything, the heightened sense of martyrdom surrounding video games comes more from the advent of the Internet than any true larger than usual attack on gaming. Kids and teenagers in the 80s and 90s were far less likely to know that their favorite groups and shows were under attack, because kids and teenagers don't really read newspaper and they don't really watch the news (they

GameSpot posts Crysis preview

Posted January 8th, 2007 at 9:23pm

GameSpot has posted a preview of Crysis, an upcoming first person shooter from developer Crytek. The preview focuses mostly on the incredibly detailed graphics of the game, one of the first to use the new DirectX 10 graphic development platform from Microsoft. Here they go in-depth on the game's graphical abilities: Throughout the entire demo all the graphical features of Crysis dazzled us. The use of motion blur and depth of field made any kind of sudden motion seem more realistic. Trying to use the iron sights of a weapon is also cool, as sun glints on the metal and the depth of field blurs objects that aren't in focus. The high dynamic range lighting and extensive shadowing made the level feel sun-drenched. Not much is known about the game's storyline, except that it takes place in the near future and will have unique environments to explore in the later levels. Check the link above for the full preview, and keep an eye here on GameLedge for more news about this title.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s then go ahead to sell those artefacts to various parties, such as scientists, dealers etc interested in exploiting the anomalous energy. Hence, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s are the guys who, risking their lives go into the Zone trying to earn a penny, they are basically marauders. Ultimately, the player’s goal is to unveil the mystery behind the Zone: what has created it, what’s controlling it and what’s happening there in reality. Check out the full Q&A, which includes a detailed look at the graphics engine, the RPG elements, and much, at the link above.

Mobile games developer sues Microsoft

Posted January 2nd, 2007 at 10:42pm

In-Fusio, a game developer for the mobile platform, has sued Microsoft over an alleged breach of contract. According to GameSpot, In-Fusio agreed in 2005 to pay Microsoft $2 million in royalties in exchange for three years worth of exlusive rights to the Halo name on mobile phones. In-Fusio states that, after approving an application named Halo Portal, Microsoft rejected four game designs with little to no explanation why. In November, Microsoft demanded the first of four payments of $500,000 from In-Fusio, which had been delayed due to the lack of approved game designs. In-Fusio's suit states that Microsoft cannot terminate the contract as they threatened, because they were already in breach of their agreement. In-Fusio has sued Microsoft for over $10 million in damages, not including legal fees, as well the continued exclusive rights to Halo on mobile phones. Check the GameSpot story for more details.
