Pick up your DS and prepare for your SAT’s

Posted April 14th, 2008 at 11:18pm

Aspyr Media announced that they've penned a multi-year agreement to bring a "game" (if you will) to the Nintendo DS that will prep college-bound hopefuls for their SAT's. Working with test preparation firm Kaplan, they've started work on the an as-yet untitled offering which will appear on PC, Mac and Nintendo DS. Apparently "engaging" and "visually dynamic" (ohhhhhkay), it brings the standardized SAT preparation materials created and implemented by Kaplan to an interactive medium and, of course, is intended to help get kids into college. Kaplan isn't about to start having World of Warcraft in-world study sessions just yet, however; Kaplan's general manager of pre-college programs, Anthony Manley, stated "While a video game shouldn't be seen as a substitute for a full prep course, it's an innovative and effective way to reinforce preparatory learning." I'm trying to think of a cool way to make fun of this but, truth is, it's actually a pretty good idea and if it gets a kid into college then that kid's money is well-spent on the product. No suggested retail price has appeared yet, so we can't comment on whether or not it'll cut into anyone's kegger budget.

Xbox Supreme Commander news and pics

Posted March 26th, 2008 at 11:15pm

Supreme Commander (a darn good game, let me tell you) is making its way to Xbox 360. Many of you know that already, but what you might not know yet is that we won't have our hands on it until this summer, according to Gamespot. The sequel to the Chris Taylor cult classic, Total Annihilation, met with good reviews on the PC side... but critics will have to keep it in park for a while longer where the Xbox is concerned:Aspyr Media announced today that the Hellbent Games-developed Xbox 360 edition of Supreme Commander has been pushed beyond its expected March release to "later this spring or early summer." According to an Aspyr spokesperson, the extra time in development will allow Hellbent to further improve SupCom's gameplay on the 360. Aspyr announced in November that Hellbent would be handling console-adaptation duties for Chris Taylor's supersized real-time strategy game. You can get some Supreme Commander mojo over at Game Infowire where they are showing off some SC Xbox pics. It's better than nothing.
