Warcraft dances: Where do they come from?

Posted March 27th, 2008 at 12:58pm

This isn't "news", per se... as the source of World of Warcraft dance animations has been explained to death all over the internet... but I found this to be one of the most well-edited and, heck, entertaining rundowns of where Blizzard got the inspiration for the various characters and how they shake their respective booties. In case you're not familiar with the game, World of Warcraft allows you to make your character dance on command by typing "/dance". The animations for those dances, as shown in this Youtube vid, are inspired by real life sources. Though any red-blooded male will probably rewind the Alizee part (the French girl in the black outfit who inspired the female Night Elf dance), I'm most entertained by the trees doing the Twist with Chubby Checker. They just look so happy.

Yo quiero World of Warcraft

Posted March 27th, 2008 at 12:13am

Blizzard's mission, understandably, is to seek out every corner of the earth - no matter how foul or fair - and pry people out of their hiding holes and make them play World of Warcraft. Soon, those in Latin America who want to partake in DPS, DOT and Tanking will get to enjoy the experience first hand this year. Blizzard is putting together a team to handle the Spanish version and the related support issues which will arise, and more news will be forthcoming before long, I'm sure. When the Sanskrit version of WoW is announced, I probably will stop reporting on the game all together.

World of Warcraft and lawsuits against Gilder

Posted March 26th, 2008 at 11:54pm

Like I always say: The day isn't done until you post a story about World of Warcraft (no, I really do say that). This time around I'd like to direct your attention to this story on Game Politics which explains the trouble journey of a "bot" creator named Michael Donnelly who fell into Blizzard's bad graces and has found himself in court. A "bot" is a bit of software that can be used in-game to cheat or otherwise give yourself a fair advantage that other players don't have... a real no-no when the game itself depends on all players having something of an equivalent balance in the World of Warcraft experience and economic system. Last week, both sides filed new motions in U.S. District Court for summary judgment, essentially seeking to have themselves declared victorious without having to go through a trial. We note that in its motion, Blizzard claims that Donnelly sold $2.8 million worth of Glider. That’s a lot of bots. For the legal-minded, here is Blizzard’s motion and here is Donnelly’s. Both those motions are linked at Game Politics. If you're interested in checking out what happens when you cross a game mega-publisher like Blizzard, head over and take a look.

A look at Starcraft II’s Zerg

Posted March 21st, 2008 at 12:12am

Over at Gaming Today there's a great video featuring Starcraft II lead producer Chris Sigaty, who talks about the evolution of the Zerg race in the upcoming sequel to Blizzard's hit real time strategy title. He explains about how both new and old units play an integral role in shaping the Zerg race and its role within the game, and in particular he shows off the truly awesome Queen Zerg, who is far deadlier than she was in the previous installment. I have to admit I was already excited about Starcraft II, but seeing so much of the game action in this video really got me pumped up. Even more exciting to me, however, was the clear indication that Blizzard is putting its trademark level of attention on asymmetrical balance... one of the most difficult aspects of getting a modern RTS "right". Oooo I can't wait. Blizzard, you are the wind beneath my wings.
