The Penny Arcade Game, Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One, has been getting mixed reviews from some outlets. Not sure why -- it looks pretty fun to me. But in any case, don't rely on the bloggers to tell you, download the demo and see for yourself. Available for http://www.hotheadgames.com/Demo/rainslickep1_windows_r1.exe Windows http://www.hotheadgames.com/Demo/rainslickep1_mac_r1.dmg Mac http://www.hotheadgames.com/Demo/rainslickep1_linux_r1.tgz and Linux The demo has a comfortable range of options, you know, for a demo: Design and develop their own character, seeing it come to life in 3D and in the comic-style 2D cut scenes Play through the tutorial level and the beginning of the game's storyline Access the Startling Developments Agency screen to browse through the case log, inventory and dossier to get a sneak peek at the full game So, get on that download link and enjoy.

25 Linux games you’ve got to have

Posted April 15th, 2008 at 2:28am

Whether you're a PC or console gamer, it's not often that you feel a wave of jealousy to hear about what's happening on the Linux gaming front... but maybe that should change. Rangit has a list of 25 truly awesome Linux games which stand next to the better-known triple-A titles of the console or PC world. Some are familiar (Quake Wars: Enemy Territory) and some you have have never heard of before (World of Padman). I was particularly taken with "Frets of Fire":Winner of the Assembly Demo Party 2006, Frets on Fire is a music video game that uses the keyboard to play along with scrolling on-screen musical notes to complete a song. The player has to imagine the keyboard as a guitar and pick it up to play. One hand will be used to press the ‘frets’ (F1 to F5) and another will be used to press the ‘picks’ (Shift or Enter). Colored markers that appears are to be played by pressing ‘frets’ of the correct color and ‘picks’ at the correct moment. There are also song editors and tutorials featured in the game. This game was addictive once I got the hang of it. With Linux gaining ascendancy in the computing world as an alternative to the tightly controlled environment of OS X or the bug-ridden mess of Vista, you might do well to remember some of the names on this list... because your next OS might be of the Open Source variety.
