Mirror’s Edge Gameplay Footage

Posted May 8th, 2008 at 10:15am

Here's a game that I'm getting pretty excited about. Mirror's Edge. Inspired by Parkour, aka freerunning, aka you're gonna break your neck when you fall, Mirror's Edge tells the story of a young woman looking to find her sister. Over the eyes and ears of a squeaky-clean surveillance-based totalitarian regime. While working as a courier for the underworld. Which involves taking messages from here to there out of the range of the cameras. Across the rooftops. Here, just watch. That's all in-game footage, by the way. So, let's get out our little checklist here: Interesting visual motif? Running across the rooftops: Check. Compelling plot framework? 1984 is a favorite novel, so check. Compelling character? We'll see, but a woman fighting the good fight to rescue a sister has serious potential: Check. I could play a game that involved nothing but running across rooftops all day long. Add in a good plot and I'm hooked.

Microsoft explains why the Xbox doesn’t have mod support. Kinda.

Posted April 14th, 2008 at 10:58pm

This piece from Eurogamer about mod support on the Xbox caught my eye, and with games like Unreal Tournament and Half Life 2 - two games with a healthy mod-making community - playing such a prominent role in the Xbox's history (and popularity), it does give one pause to ask why it is that the Xbox doesn't support certain kinds of user-based add-ons. Microsoft XNA general manager Chris Satchell cited several concerns with user-created mods becoming commonly supported for the Xbox, some of which included security concerns:Really what works in this industry is the people who have access to that native metal of the console, that go through these processes, are financially invested in this industry; they wouldn't do anything bad. Developers want to do good things because they want this industry to work. There's a lot of people out there that just want to prove they can screw things up. I think there's very mature, sensible hackers who just want to prove how good they are, and they don't cause harm, and there's malicious hackers, and any platform that let's you do that, and doesn't have the right security measures in place - whether it's Sony, whether it's Nintendo, whether it's Apple, whether it's anyone - you're inviting trouble, because sooner or later someone will want to prove they can do it. This begs the question of whether or not Satchell is suggesting that PS3 users are exposed to security threats that the Xbox 360 is not (as there

Sonic Unleashed Teaser Trailer

Posted March 24th, 2008 at 9:34am

This weekend some sites brokes some leaked screenshots from this trailer. That's just fine, but I'm going to take my time if it's only screenshots. I mean, with rendering tech what it is these days, those could have been from some fan-made thing. But no, the movie from official sources kind of proves it. FINALLY! A Sonic game that captures the feeling of speed. Jeez, about time, people. Hm, coming "soon." Where's the rolleyes icon... I admit, however, the Wii guy in me wonders what's so great here that requires the power of the XBox 360 and the PS3. I mean, how about a little Wii lovin'?

One million pre-orders for Gran Turismo 5

Posted March 20th, 2008 at 10:15pm

If you see the positively luscious visuals for the Playstation 3's upcoming Gran Turismo 5 then it won't come as much surprise to you that it's accumulated a whopping million pre-orders in Europe. Though the title is already kicking all butt in Japan as it is, the European pre-orders are the most noteworthy of all. Ars Technica credits the downloadable "beta" version and the PS3 bundle deal as having a lot to do with it.Combined with the inevitable sales generated by the downloadable version of the game and the recently-announced Euro GT5 PS3 bundle, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is on track to rock Europe hard when it lands later next month. Fellow download and disc title Warhawk, the leaderboards for which indicate that over 500,000 players have played at least a single ranked game, has set the pace for full retail-equivalent downloadable titles. That's a pace that Polyphony Digital's sim racer will likely be more than able to best. If you have a PS3 already make sure you browse the downloadable games and demos to find a pre-release "beta" style version of the game that you can get for free and test-run. If you're someone who got the console for the eye candy then you won't be disappointed.
