Awesome, if true. It doesn't have a publisher yet, but the creator of the first game says he's been working on the sequel for a year now.

Ubisoft Wins Rights to Clancy Name

Posted March 24th, 2008 at 10:25am

Ubisoft has fought for, and received exclusive royalty-free rights to the Tom Clancy name for future video game productions. I'm a little confused here as to how this actually works. I know that one can buy rights to a name and whatnot. Mr. Clancy has already sold his name to a brand of books penned by others. And we must make no mistake here that the Tom Clancy name is most certainly a brand at this point: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon to name a few. I wonder, if I stare at a mirror and say "Tom Clancy" five times fast, will he come out and immerse me in a world of socio-political intrigue? What I don't fully understand is how one can sell a name, and what will happen to it now that he's sold it to Ubisoft? We know that Ubisoft is developing a Clancy-themed MMO, and Gamespot tells us that Ubisoft will be able to start making mashups between the different Clancy game properties, but where does this leave the Real Tom Clancy? If Ubisoft decides to start slapping Tom Clancy on every spy property they produce, can Mr. Clancy step in and say, "Woah, gang, you're going a little too far?" Nobody wants to produce a bad game -- at least I think nobody wants to -- but eventually, they're going to ship a game that's sub-par, and what happens then? Intellectual property gone wild, I suppose.
